Wednesday, July 16 - Touring Seward (Seward, Alaska)

 

I usually sleep with a small fan on my bedside table. Jesse bought me a battery operated fan but it quit working. Having no electric means no fan to sleep with which made it hard. Besides not having air it’s so quiet.

Bob brought us some donuts from Safeway this morning. Thanks Bob!

When I got up Jesse told me that a cruise ship was docked here.

Around noon Bob picked us up and we headed to the Alaska Sea Life Center.

And look who we found on the way

Chuck and Kathy and their grandson Anthony walked around the center with us.

The downtown area. We walked around in and out of the shops.

Then we went into the library & museum

We watched a film on the earthquake that took place on Good Friday March, 27 1964.

Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 139 deaths. Lasting four minutes and 38 seconds, it was the most powerful recorded earthquake in U.S. and North American history, and the second most powerful ever measured by seismograph. It measured a magnitude of 9.2, making it the second strongest earthquake in recorded history. The strongest being the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile.

We walked around but nothing else too exciting.

We went back to camp and went to B&J for chicken taco’s.

We watched the cruise ship pull out of the dock and left.

Then decided to drive to the hardware store to see about purchasing a new fan..No luck.

This is a memorial for Benny Benson

He was the boy who designed the flag of Alaska. Benny was 13 when he won a contest in 1927 to design the flag for the territory of Alaska, which became a U.S. state in 1959.

The flag of Alaska consists of eight gold stars, forming the Big Dipper and the North Star, on a dark blue field.
