Friday, June 6 - Exploring Whitehorse (Whitehorse, YK Canada)

Whitehorse

Established as the Yukon’s capital city in 1953, the City of Whitehorse is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in Canada. Named the Wilderness City, Whitehorse is nestled on the banks of the famous Yukon River and is surrounded by rugged mountains and pristine lakes. With gorgeous scenery and a vibrant city scene, it is no small wonder that over 27,000 people make Whitehorse their home. In addition, a healthy economy, a small town feel, a perfect environment in which to raise a family, and access to the great outdoors put Whitehorse among the best cities in Canada in which to live, work and play. Its economic base includes mining services, tourism, transportation services, and government services.

We were not sure what we doing today, so this is the guys talking about it.

It was decided they wanted to see the steam boat. We drove to the river front and did a self guided tour of S.S. Klondike.

It started with a film made in 1980 about the ship.

012

The S. S. Klondike was the name of two sternwheelers, the second now a national historic site located in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. Both ran freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City along the Yukon River from 1921-1936 and 1937-1950, respectively

You can see how big the paddlewheel next to my travel mates.

You'll have a great time in Dawson City. Certainly my favourite stop on our two trips to the north. We stopped at Moose Creek campground just past Stewart Crossing and the campground was great. Be sure to go and see the dredge when in Dawson and take a drive up to the Dome, both are worth the time. Diamond Tooth Gerties was pretty good too. One time we were up there we took the Dempster Highway all the way to Inuvik, beautiful drive but about 400 miles of gravel. You will hear a lot about the Top of the World highway but we found it great to the border then a little slow from the border to Chicken but more than worth the time.
