Monday, March 2 – Busy Day at the Fort

 

We slept very good last night. It is so quiet and peaceful here. It was cold went we awoke about 37 degrees.

Jesse walked with Jerry on the trails around the old theater, and where the German POW camp was during WW2, mostly wooded areas now.

I took a shower and got cleaned up then we sat and visited for a while this morning.

Kit and Jerry told us of the days when they road their bikes hundreds of miles and camped out in tents. I would not even attempt to do something like that. Jerry would like to ride his bike across country, but Kit says “no” to driving the motor home for him to rest in each night.

After our visit we went in the rig for Jesse to take a shower and Kit needed to do the same. I wrote the journal while Jerry did his Wii fit.

When we were finished with that we went over to the neighbors to say hello and see if they needed any help getting things ready.

We were all going over for lunch at 1:00. It was a pot luck feast for the carving club which Jerry belongs to. They served brisket, potato salad, baked beans, a bean salad, relish tray and home baked rolls. There was several desserts that included brownies, peach cobbler and a cherry cream cheese pie.

Everything was delicious and I cleaned my plate. Afterwards Kit and I took the golf cart and rode through some trails around the fort. It was very interesting. While the guys stayed there with the Direct TV guy to have Jerry’s second satellite station set up. Now they have service to there outside TV.

Afterwards we took a ride to the convenience store to get a fountain drink and to show us around the town of Brackettville.

We came back and sat outside until it was too chilly. We went to our own rigs for the night.

It was a full day and we are enjoying our time getting to know Kit and Jerry better.

Sunday, March 1 – Travel to Fort Clark

This morning we left Llano Grande site 2100 at 7:35am. We rode over to the dog park to let the boys have their last run in this beautiful area.

When we left the park it was 45 degrees and 8am. It was windy on US-83 North and we figured we were in for a very windy day. But after traveling for about 150 miles the wind was much calmer.

Once we moved past Laredo and I35 we continued North on US 83 and stopped at the 1st picnic area, Jesse walked the boys while I made lunch. We sat in the truck while eating because it was too chilly to sit outside at 54 degrees.

In Carrizo Springs we stopped for fuel and paid $2.09 for diesel. We continued on our way and arrived in Fort Clark at 3:30pm, after traveling 335 miles and it was 66 degrees.

Kit and Jerry have a lovely place here on the Fort and allowed us to use the concrete space next to them. We are the 1st 5th wheel to visit and stay with them so they were not sure how well we would fit.

With the help of all three of us Jesse backed into the space first try. Good going! :~)

After we were set up we sat down to eat dinner that Kit had made for us. She made taco soup, yum, and Jerry grilled some hotdogs. We had brownies for dessert.

While we were eating the wild turkeys came to visit.

After dinner we piled into their car and we took a quick tour of the area. We were surprised to learn that there are approx. 4,000 acres on the fort and about 2,000 residents.

I will post pictures after Jesse hooks up the thingy that give up a better signal. After our short tour we said good night and went to our own homes for the evening.

Can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.

Saturday, February 28 – Packing day

 

Only Jesse and Carl walked today because Heinz was up on top of his rig washing it when Jesse got there.

Jesse was very anxious to get started with the packing up process, but it started to get very winding and cold.

When he walked this morning it was 70 degrees, by 9:00 it was 57 degrees and raining. As usual the rain was for a short time, but enough to make things wet.

Just around 9:30 Sue and Ted came to the door to say good-bye and brought us a very beautiful cutting board and wine rack that Ted made. Ted is extremely talented makes all types of things with wood. Thank you so much!!!! :~)

Because everything was wet we waited a while before packing things in the basement.

Jesse wiped the standing water off the truck bed cover, then took our trash and trash can to turn them in. That would also help dry out the cover.

When he returned we packed the basement, we had things really well organized and packed.

Then we unrolled the bed cover and Jesse started to pack the truck. He needed to make room for the bikes which we purchased while here in RGV. He had to take them apart to make them fit and not interfere with the hitch.

The temps outside were still very chilly and windy.

We were to meet at Heinz and Irene’s for cocktails at 4:00 then on to Lin’s Chinese Buffet, but it was too cold to sit outside for cocktails so Carl was to pick us up at 4:45.

Jesse and I decided to walk down and met them. As we started down their street they pulled out and went the other way. So he we are running though peoples sites to get two streets over and flag them down. I am sure if anyone way watching they wondered who these crazy people were?

We caravanned to the restaurant Us, then Gordon and Juanita then Heinz and Irene. We all had a very nice meal and lots of conversation and laughs. 

Back at the Inn Jesse and I watched the movie “Milk”. It was a little slow but I enjoyed it. Afterwards we were off to bed, need a good nights sleep for our travel day tomorrow.
